now, volunteering in their community on this martin luther king holiday weekend. this national day of service going on here on the national mall where the president is -- it's an elementary school. >> it is an elementary school here in washington. i believe he's doing a little bit similar to his service project last time around four years ago because i believe he had a paint brush in his hand that time. but it looks like he's helping -- what i've seen so far, helping to complete an overhaul of a school in washington, d.c. he has some very good volunteers. i believe they are with city year and they're working to, you know, maybe do a little painting, a little varnishing of a bookcase, john. >> it is the burrville elementary school in northeast washington there. i have to say mrs. obama sporting a little more form than the president painting that bookcase. >> she also has a pair of gloves. maybe he's worried about getting dirty. we lost the shot. that's okay. a lot going on today in the nation's capital. >> service events going on all over the city. with all the things going on, secu

's actually the 84th anniversary of doctor martin luther king's birth. many people know who doctor king was, a clergyman, activist, husband, father, the most prominent promoter of nonviolence and civil disobedience; he received the nobel peace prize in 1964 in recognition of his nonviolence. only we discussing assault weapons ban ammunitions but acknowledging that today would have been doctor martin luther king's 84th birthday, a very prolific activist. i would like to recognize and former city employee and decorated soldier mr. hillyer terry, born june 4, 1923. while attending college he was drafted to serve in world war ii; he served the united states army from 1943 to 1946 where he received an honorable discharge; he was awarded the american theater campaign medal; the eaim campaign medal with four bronze stars, good combat medal, world war ii victory medal. he was the city and county employee for 33 years and retired as a trusted supervisor for the san francisco municipal transportation agency. he leaves behind a wife as well as his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildre

about her father making martin luther king jr. a day of service. and what is he feeling, going through this time as he prepares to take the oath of office once again. and what would it be like to actually have martin luther king jr.'s bible, as well. had a chance to talk to her, there are a couple of things she said. >> there is nothing quite like that first time when you walk out and you see the mall is full of people who come from all over the country and the world to celebrate your first inauguration. so that was historic. we have been through a challenging four-year period. he has been very emotional about the campaign and all of the young and older people who have just rolled up their sleeves and worked so hard to get him reelected for a second term. so i think it will be a deeply emotional moment. >> there is criticism about his new cabinet. if you look at cia, secretary of defense, state and treasury, all white men. what does he need to do moving forward so that there are more people who look like you and look like others who are in his cabinet? >> well, suzanne, the president h

's the 50th anniversary of the "i have a dream" speech by dr. martin luther king. it's also on martin luther king holiday. what's the mood there in washington? >> well, i have to tell you, it's a little quiet. i walked by the white house earlier today, and they were still putting up the reviewing stand. there were some folks there. some, you know, very excited. talking to the cab driver on the way over here to the studio tonight, he's saying, yeah, it seems really quiet. i mean, people are definitely coming into town and congress members say they've gotten rid of all the tickets. that they had more people asking for tickets than they could help. so, i mean, but there's no question that it is a little subdued compared to four years ago. last time, of course, there was a new president, new first family. it was a historic election. i think this time it's a little more subdued because there's a little more realism and the level of hope and the expectations are a little lower which may, in fact, be helpful to barack obama in his second term because the expectations the first time were just so sky

on the martin luther king holiday, organizers say attendance monday may be higher than for any other second inauguration. published estimates indicate the private fundraising goal for the festivities is about the same as 2009 when $53 million was raised. four years ago, individual donations were capped at $50,000 per person. this year, the presidential inaugural committee, or p.i.c., is accepting unlimited contributions om both individuals and corporations. p.i.c. c.e.o. and president stephen kerrigan told the newshour about the theme, "our people, our future," as the clock behind him ticked down to monday. >> the president started his campaign back in 2007, really, it started with a conversation with people all across the country about how we can collectively move this country forward. and he has kept that up through his administration and throughout the second campaign, because he really believes that our people are the future of the country and the strength of our country. you know, he's watched the grit and determination and hard work of average, everyday, ordinary americans help turn a

in the national day of service, which pays tribute to martin luther king jr. later, michelle obama and jill biden host a concert for american military families and their children. so as president obama prepares to kick off his second term, we wanted to know how the american people think that he's doing as he closes out the fist one. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is here in washington with me this morning. good morning to you. so thumbs or thumbs down. how do they think he's doing? >> we have some polls, a lot of polls. a lot of polls have skasked, ise doing a good job? do you approve or not approve? our cnn poll of polls say 53% say, yes, they approve of the job the president is doing in office, 42% disapprove. but what about the specific issues, not overall. take a look at this from orc, look at the numbers on the left, randi. these are where he's doing very well on the issues, terrorism, environment, foreign affairs, immigration, but those are not so important to americans. the economy, he's at 48%. what's the second most important? the deficit, we know that's been in the news lately, 4

to be martin luther king, the holiday that celebrates his legacy. the senate historian gave a historical perspective. health varioust variou presidents treat the de. >>-- the various ways presidents treat the day. >> the constitution rights of the oath of office. -- rights out the oath of office. -- writes out the oath of office. most presidents say, "so help me god." there was a tradition, a folklore that developed that washington said, "so help me god." we as historians have been looking for any possible resource. we're not sure about this. one of the accounts was given to us by washington irving. he gave his ramparts that washington said, -- rememberance that washington said, "so help me god." most presidents in the 19th century did not repeat the oath of office. they just said, " i do," at the end of the oath. ,tarting about the 1880's presidents began to say, "so help me god." the chief justice who swears the men inevitably says -- them in inevitably says, "so help me god." it has become tradition. tradition is much more important than even constitutional structure in this process.

obviously because it's the birthday of dr. martin luther king, jr., we remember who was killed by an act of gun violence. so they're giving $200 out per gun. they have some other stipulations here. and just one more thing. it says the county has contributed $10,000 from its trust fund, and there's additional money. it's like an ongoing thing with them. but particularly because it's opening to residents of san francisco county and i can't help but think all of this was sparked by our own gun buy-back program. we have something rolling and looks like other focuses will pick up on it. and furthermore i will just say this. in the spirit of the cooperation that was done with the gun buy-back in december between -- or a month, the programs, the community programs in san francisco and oakland and the departments in san francisco and oakland, i think we should continue that spirit, because guns travel. so we can get the word out about this one also to the citizens of san francisco, and to everybody, i think maybe we can get some more guns out of the hands of people. so i just want to mention tha
